More and more organizations are using coaching to help employees develop. Coaching is a process whereby an individual interacts with another to teach, model, and provide feedback of technical, professional, or personal skills. Coaching has been proven to be more powerful than typical classroom learning, where people come and take a course on a particular topic.

The workplace is rapidly changing. Often goals are changing as well, thereby requiring employees to have skills not yet developed. Coaching is a great relationship that can help develop those skills. For example, when salespeople truly seek to provide customer-oriented solutions, a coach can provide them with missing customer service skills, thus broadening the capabilities of the sales force.

Training courses are designed for groups of learners and must be scheduled on the basis of demand. However, when an employee needs help in order to perform, a coach with appropriate skills, experience, and willingness can transfer those skills in relatively short time.

Therefore, coaching is a skill that everyone can use, small business owners to business managers, to seasoned workers who are responsible for orienting new employees to processes.
