An agency that provides children’s mental health services in central Ontario has been fined $125,000 after a staff member was assaulted by a youth. The organization pleaded guilty to failing to provide information, instruction and supervision to protect an employee from workplace violence following an incident at the Syl Apps Youth Centre facility in Oakville. A youth worker who’d recently started at the detention and custody unit for boys was repeatedly hit by a youth he’d been trying to get to return to his room for the night while a co-worker who intervened was also hurt. Both workers suffered physical and psychological injuries.
