Employer Sentenced To 1-Day In Jail

A man who runs an Ontario embroidery business has been ordered to serve one day in jail after failing to pay employees more than $30,000. An Ontario Court justice of the peace in Newmarket sentenced Brian John Villeneuve to a day behind bars for breaches of the Employment Standards Act. He was also handed a one-year ban on starting a business that employs people. The Ministry of Labour says it received claims of unpaid wages and termination pay totalling $31,271.67 from seven employees of the embroidery business. The court also ordered him to pay.
