To run a successful organization, you need to evaluate and assess performance on an ongoing basis. Benchmarking is the process of identifying leading practices in a given area: for example, productivity brand management, logistics or training and development, and then comparing your own practices against the standards of others. In order to do this, you need sound data.

In human resources, there are two broad categories of metrics. Human capital metrics capture aspects of your enterprise. This could be the collection of core competencies that you have, customer service standards, the amount of time devoted to launching new products, the capability of your leadership, or the abilities of your management.

HR metrics on the other hand are devoted to measure of your HR functions: cost of employee turnover, cost of training per employee, or the number of lost work days due to some time or accident.
